6 Go Green tips – what are you waiting for, our planet needs you.

1) Go organic. There are plenty of products in the shops now offering you the more ‘environmentally friendly’ choice, so make the most of them. Check out what shampoos keep your hair clean and the earth green!

2) Be brave. Make friends with all your insects and kindly escort them out of your room rather than spray them. A spray may be quick and effective but the long term effects aren’t worth it.

3) Hitch a ride. If a bunch of your friends are meeting at the mall why not all get a lift together and save on some petrol.

4) Carrots by candle light. Eat supper with your family by candle light. You’ll save electricity and have a great rustic vibe too.

5) Pick up a piece of litter. Not only will you put it where it belongs, but someone else might see you and do the same. Who knows? you could start a whole revolution!

6) Hug a tree. It’s a lot more fun than you think and the personal bond you form will make you think twice about wasting paper.

Hunger tsunami

Soaring food prices, food hoarding, and the resulting riots in Africa and Asia leave us in no doubt that there is a global food shortage, “A silent tsunami which knows no borders is sweeping the world,” says Josette Sheeran, the head of the UN World Food Programme (WFP). Price hikes will push 100 million people deeper into poverty, says the World Bank.

Who’s to blame, what’s to blame, is anyone to blame, and what impact has the production of bio-fuels had on food production?

Next month in the Galactic Times, we look at the bigger picture. What are the reasons surrounding the famine, misery and malnutrition engulfing countries around the world?

Bike-it on your gap year

From the land where the sun shines rarely, we are hearing rumours of forward thinking plans. London will invest approximately GBP500 million on walking and cycling programmes over the next decade.

There’ll be a bike-share program, and 6,000 bikes will be located across docking stations every 300m so Londoners and visitors have quick and easy access to a bike. That’s good news if you’re thinking of a gap year in London - no more need to be squashed like a rat in a sardine tin in the rush-hour tube not-so- jolly. Put your rain jacket on and get out amongst the landmarks. The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone has said, “Over 50% of tube journeys in central London are quicker on foot.”

Across the pond, New York is installing approximately 320 kilometres of bike lanes and 37 new bike shelters. There’s a successful cycle hire scheme in Paris where there are 10,000 bikes at 750 points located around the city, and another one in Barcelona. Yip, some cities around the world are endeavouring to lower emissions of carbon dioxide, reduce traffic and air pollution, and promote healthier lifestyles.

London, Barcelona, Paris, New York. Not a bad gap year route.

Message in a bottle from Switzerland

Did you know it’s been reported that approximately 2.5 million plastic water bottles are thrown away every hour in the United States? Did you know that there’s currently controversy surrounding bisphenol A, a chemical that goes into making plastic?

So if you’re concerned about the environment and yourself, or you’re just a hydration obsessed urban jungalite in need of a water fix, then either give up your plastic dependency or get into something like the Sigg habit. Visit www.mysigg.com and check out the re-usable water bottles that can be personalized to suit your own style with various lids and accessories, and then ditch the more pricey plastic habit for good.

They say the water coming out of our taps in South Africa is some of the best in the world. Maybe we should use it.
